Cheng Mei-hua sworn in as new Taipei Cultural Commissioner

Cheng Mei-Hua, an Assistant Professor at Shih Chien University, was sworn in as the new Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Taipei City Government, August 2 in Taipei in an inauguration ceremony presided over by Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin. 

Cheng said in the ceremony that in her new role, she will spare no effort to “attract more artistic talent and creative thoughts” to build the capital into a city of creativity.

Having resided in Taipei for more than forty years, Cheng said she is accepting the appointment with the hope that she can contribute what she has learned during her tenure in positions related to cultural administration.

Cheng further revealed some of her plans for her upcoming tenure, including carrying out cultural exchanges; effectively communicating with public art groups; and cultivating a broader vision of culture among the city’s residents.

In his remarks during the ceremony, Mayor Hau said that Cheng’s academic background and experience in cultural-related posts are instrumental to her new position. With a Ph.D. in Public Administration from National Chengchi University, Cheng is now an Assistant Professor in the General Education Center of Shih Chien University.

The new Commissioner has completed an extensive rotation of positions relating to cultural affairs. She worked as Deputy Chief in the 1st Department of the Council of Cultural Affairs (CCA), responsible for cultural policy, assets and facilities, from 1997 to 1998.

She then transferred to serve as the Chief of the 3rd Department of the CCA, responsible for affairs concerning performing arts, visual arts, and international exchanges on art, from 1998 to 2000.
